A couple of days ago I spoke to my friend about our new president and after talking about all the politics we both said how much we appreciated each other. He told me that he prays to God and gives thanks for having me and my family in his life. I don’t even remember if I said that I too am thankful to have him in my circle of friends. I did, however, say that our entire purpose for ShapeShifters was this… no matter what part of the world we are from or walks of life, we are in the end the same. We all have hearts that yearn for connection and love. Although we experience life through different lenses, we all suffer from the same condition called, being human. Unfortunately right now our country has become very divided, more so than ever.

In light of the November 8th election, we felt the need to put our few cents in about Trump becoming the next president. Firstly, I would like to say WTF!?!? What was going through the minds of those who supported Trump and ultimately voted him into office? For a man who has put his foot in his mouth countless times, he sure had more electoral votes than I thought he would, let alone enough to win! He has made remarks demeaning women and has made no secret about his stance on immigration rights, LGBTQ rights and abortion laws (among other things). Why would you want such a narrow minded clown leading the country?

It has been reported that 15,000 people wrote in their vote for Harambe, a dead gorilla. Forget about the fact that the gorilla is dead, even if he was alive would it have been realistic to have voted in a damn gorilla? What has happened to this country? Maybe this was just people’s way of saying that a dead gorilla would have made a better president than either one of the 2 candidates. However, this showed me how immature and ignorant people are about the power of their vote. Voting for Harambe was not a constructive way to make their voices heard when it really mattered. An educated voter would have looked at both candidates and picked the best one … not a dead gorilla. I do believe that everyone should be allowed to vote, however, there should be a test! A test to show that the potential voters understand the importance of a vote, and are knowledgeable of what is happening in the country. The history of voting is taught in schools, but perhaps people forget or it is not drilled in hard enough. Voting was not always a right, women and people of color had to fight for that right. Only free white men over the age of 21 and who were landowners had the right to vote. I will not take that privilege for granted. People have DIED for the right to vote and here we are trying to elect a damn dead ASS gorilla to become our president. It is a mockery of what all of those people died for. Where is the pride in that? This may be cliche, buttttttt … please don’t let their deaths be in vain.

The country seemed to be progressing forward, or at least I thought. We had the country’s first African American president, and he served 2 terms. I thought that we were finally beginning to see, as a nation, that the color of our skin doesn’t make us more or less qualified. Barack Obama was good at what he did because he was able to relate to the majority of the country. Not just relating to the 1% of the ridiculously rich folks. After President Obama, I thought (along with so many others), why shouldn’t a woman become president? Apparently not everyone felt this way! Maybe ‘Merica wasn’t ready for a woman to lead our nation… little too progressive 4 ya was it?? OR maybe people just didn’t want Hillary? The Clinton name has been tainted by the media ever since Mr. Bill was in office, in presidency and when he was governor of Arkansas. As a result, Hillary definitely had her work cut out for her when she decided to step into politics.

Did Trump win because he has money and because of his name? He does not have the qualifications to be the president of this country! Trump was seeking power! He is a 70 year old clown, who has not done a single thing to better humanity. As I was watching the presidential debates, he was saying that once he is elected into office only HE had the power “make America great again.” Despite the lack of detail, one of things that stood out to me, was the fact that he was going to put an end to outsourcing jobs. Many of the clothing items that bare the Trump name on it also bare, “made in China” on the tag. Why do you need to be elected president to make that change? I have said it before, “be the change you wish to see in the world.” Trump is a boss, not a leader. He will sit there and bark orders and criticize what others are doing, but he will never get off his gluteal folds and DO what needs to be done even if it hurts.

Now that a privileged person is back in power, what does that mean for all us normal, little people? What decisions will be made about OUR healthcare, and OUR women’s right to chose to have an abortion? People like Trump don’t understand the struggle WE have everyday. He never had to worry about waiting 90 days in between jobs until health care benefits kicked in. He never had to worry about being impregnated with a child he cannot provide for. He never had to worry about being harassed by the cops because his skin color was the wrong shade (although his hue of orange doesn’t look healthy). He never had to worry about being kicked out of his home because his papers were out of order or filed wrong. With all of these facts brought into light, how can we say he will have OUR best interests in mind? Obama is one of us and understands our struggles, but the privileged few of this country could not stand that one of us became the president. They want to keep us down, ignorant, and fighting one another. Electing Trump was the privileged elite getting their power over us back. Ever read Animal Farm by George Orwell?

At this point all we can do is hope that Trump will not make total mess of things. Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream, as did many before him. President Obama was a glimpse of that dream. I don’t think he was voted into office because of the color of his skin. He was voted in because of the content of his character. It was short lived and was taken away just as fast as it was given. No matter who you voted for, we can hopefully agree that we need to band together to ensure that everyone we love and care about is not under any harm. As Hillary Clinton and President Obama stated in their post election speeches, above all else we are American first.
